1976 Swedish Grand Prix Winner
The Tyrrell P34 was introduced in 1976.
The idea behind the design was to improve aerodynamics by increasing air penetration and reducing drag. Using only one pair of small wheels would mean losing mechanical grip, so Tyrrell tried this novel solution of having 2 pairs of wheels at the front.
Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler were driving for Tyrrell when the car was introduced in 1976. The teams best success with the car came at the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix where they achieved a one, two finish.
With the lack of development from Goodyear for the unigue 10 inch front tyres, performance began to drop off and the design was abandoned at the end of 1977.
Later the F1 rules where changed to allow only cars with 4 wheels to enter the F1 World Championship.
