On the same weekend Ayrton Senna died in 1994 there was another fatal collision at the San Marino Grand Prix.
Roland Ratzenberger was an Austrian who had just started his first F1 season with the new Simtek team. It was only his 3rd F1 race.
Data from the car showed that he may have sustained damage to his front wing on his previous lap, it is thought that his wing broke off and went under the car causing a decrease in downforce sending him off the track. It is though that he broke his neck on impact.
The HANS head restraint device was introduced to F1 in 2001 to stop this type of injury.
The Barrichello incident also occurred on the same fateful weekend. Looking back at the 3 accidents, Barrichello's looks just bad as the ones that killed Senna and Ratzenberger. Look at his head moving violently in the video. Rubens was surely very lucky escape with his life.
