Jordan Formula 1′s First Year
Anyone remember Jordan F1′s first year back in 1991, that was around the time I started watching F1. With a total of 18 (yes 18!) Formula 1 teams starting at various points during that year, Eddie Jordan didn’t do bad by finishing in 5th place in his debut season.
Eddie Jordan had a decent amount of success in other forms of motorsport before then. He competed in the European and British Formula 3 championships with future Formula One drivers Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert.
In that first year in F1 Eddie hired Italian Andrea de Cesaris and Belgian Bertrand Gachot to drive the Ford powered EJ01. Gachot however failed to finish the F1 season due to ending up in prison for attacking a taxi driver.
Although that gave way for a young Michael Schumacher to get his first taste of a Formula 1 car as he made his debut at the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying 7th.
Unfortunately the normally shrewd Jordan didn’t have his legal affairs in order and Schumacher was duly snapped up by Benetton for the following race.
