“Take that…” says Murray
Eliseo Salazar is the only Chilean driver (not Columbian as Murray says in the clip) to have competed in Formula 1.
In the 1982 championship he was driving for ATS when this incident occurred. Salazar was a back marker and Piquet was the race leader in the Brabham.
Live on TV Piquet jumps out of his car and tells Salazar exactly what he thinks of them, throwing a few punches and kicks to boot. Salazar didn’t respond as the 2 South American’s were friends and Piquet helped him out when he first came to Europe.
A few weeks later Piquet apologised to Salazar after his mechanics advised him that his engine was probably only going to last a few more laps anyway.
So Salazar actually did the Brabham team a favour and saved the embarrassment of the BMW engine blowing up at their home Grand Prix.
