March F1 in the Early 70s
One of the founders of the March F1 team was the current FIA president Max Mosley. The first chassis they built was the 701 which was supplied to a number of customer teams including Tyrrell which gave it it’s first win in the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix with Jackie Stewart at the wheel.
However the 701 was roved too heavy to compete with the Lotus 72 so it was back to the drawing board. Designer Robin Herd came up with the Type 711, often referred to as the ‘tea-tray’ car on account of its distinctive front wing.
1971 was a good year for March and Ronnie Petersen proved to be a great signing and although he didn’t win a race he finished 2nd 4 times and secured 2nd in the Drivers World Championship.
